This is the breakfast the maid prepares for me every morning! how crazy is it that i have a maid?! in that pot is some tasty, tasty tea, and that little blue dish holds raw sugar. that can is sweetened condensed milk, which i'm supposed to, apparently, pour into my tea. I don't usually like sweet tea - but oh god, this is the best stuff ever. the big blue basket holds bread, and that's margarine next to it. i didn't think that any country could love bread more than the US. i was wrong. and the rolls are always so soft, and almost a little sweet. it is GOOD.

the maid and i have an interesting relationship. there has been a lot of broken spanish exchanged, and lots of gestures, and we still hardly understand each other. yesterday she demonstrated how to sleep underneath the covers - i think she thinks that since i make my bed every morning, that i must not sleep under the blanket. it was pretty cute watching this forty year old woman pretend to sleep with little fake snores. it was like charades.

everyone is a bit on edge about the impending doom in Zimbabwe. there are already refugee camps bursting at the seams just outside the city, and those people are living in even worse conditions than the mozambiquians. its bad news.

How do you have a maid? Are you living with a few people, or is it your own palatial estate, complete with maid?

Your little sister misses you.

I think we have a maid for two reasons: it is super cheap to have one (around 500 meticai/$25 a month and lodging, and that's considered excellent wages!)and also i think it is an easy way to do a small part to help an individual's life. the apartment is not big at all - just a bit bigger than our portland apartment - but damn, that is one extremely clean apartment!

and i miss my little sister too. lots.
